Integrating Jewish Music
From the new CD booklet: “It was not until I started hearing stories and anecdotes from
people who lived in pre-Holocaust Berlin that I realized what a Jewish cultural abundance
existed in Germany and in Europe in those years.
While I was well aware of the important part Jews played in developing European art and
culture, the actual Jewish religious culture had slipped out of my awareness.
This led me to wonder about, to search and research music sung in and composed for the
synagogues before during and after the Holocaust. What did it sound like? Who were the
composers and what happened to them? What happened to their music? How was their
musical language integrated in the environment? If they survived, how was their life and
music affected and how did it develop?
As in the prayer LeDor VaDor, where we promise to take responsibility for the continuity
and passing on from generation to generation, I personally experience the call to revive
and continue the path of this glorious musical culture in Germany and in Europe.”
